So what did we all make of 2011? Doom and Gloom? Tough Times? Impending new Recession and all that, how have the dreary headlines all over the media affected the Pottery Painting Industry within the UK?

How are existing studios doing, what are the prospects for the New Year, and is this a good time to be considering starting up a new business in this craft?

Well, over the 25 years we have been wholesaling to this market we have seen wild peaks and troughs in retail sentiment, boom and bust of the wider economy and inevitable changes in culture, styles and trends. At the moment it is hard to escape the news of more Retail giants issuing profit warnings, Thomas Cook and Thorntons are two such businesses that are in the thick of it right now, suggesting retail sentiment for ‘special’, ‘non-essential’ purchases is withering away? Perhaps, but I would suggest it may be worth digging just a little deeper, to see how a small independent business like yours can actually benefit from such a trend.

‘Value for Money’.

Everything you do should be seen as excellent value for money. You are not selling pieces of ceramics, oh no,… much more fulfilling than that; you are offering an activity that both Children and Adults will enjoy, the by-product of which is a timeless heirloom that could be cherished for generations, or at the very least taken home and used. Compare what you are offering with other activities available to middle class families in your area; going to the Cinema, Restaurants, Activity Parks and the like, and you should see that the ‘decorating activity’ you provide, plus the ‘finished item’ the customer will return for, makes for a fantastic, (Fun!) purchase that will compare very favourably in both cost and ‘creative value’ to the customer.

‘Love what you do!’

This really comes hand in hand with this wonderful Pottery Painting industry. The majority of studio owners have got involved due to an interest they had as a customer, and then see the business potential in running a studio. Hang on to this, as it is all too easy to lose sight of why you got involved in the first place. That’s why your customers come to your studio. Keep your business as fun and inspiring as you would like to find it if you were a customer.

To give an overall view of the market, as we see it as a supplier, we need to acknowledge that there is no ‘standard format’, or list of ‘set rules’ to run a ‘Pottery Painting’ business. It is an area of constant fascination to us both, how varied the new businesses we supply turn out to be. Essentially using the same product, colour + bisque + glaze, cook it and return it, yet operating unique businesses of varying sizes as you would expect in an industry consisting of mainly independent enterprises. The variety of size, location and style among the studios will account for the differences we see in purchasing volume, however, from what we have seen, 2011 can be looked back on as very much a positive year for the majority of the businesses we supply from small mobile to large high street studio.

The shock of the recession is really no shock any more. Looking forward, you have to go a long way to find many optimistic predictions for the economy in 2012. However, back to the small independent nature of the business you run, you are in an ideal position to capitalise on the retail public’s desire to search out products and activities that are unique and great Value for Money. Increasingly, you can add to that a desire to support local independent businesses that are invested within the local community. That ‘IS’ the business you run!

Even with the constant leaps and bounds in technology, there is still no substitute to firing a glazed piece of ceramics in a kiln to 1000C. ‘Pottery Painting’ will never be an activity the public can do at home without a kiln, they need YOU! ….well your kiln at least!

2011 has seen our business grow once again. After speaking with many studios over the past few weeks, it seems this is a trend we are not alone in. As a positive ‘barometer’ of the market , two long term studios we supply have reported to us this week that 2011 has smashed all previous records. One very useful, addition to this Winter which we did not expect was the significant attendance at Pottery Painting studios on the day of the National Civil Service strike! Take your own view on the pros and cons of striking; it seemed to fill up studios up and down the country!

So onwards to 2012! We have a lot planned, new shapes, new website, new discounting, new equipment, new ideas; more of that inour next newsletter, for now, please make a note of the new dates we have just released for the next Mayco Pottery Camp, May15th and 16th 2012.

Simple Christmas Clay Project for Kids

Clay is a wonderful medium to use with kids of all ages and abilities, as it is so forgiving, and once fired with a coat of glaze over the top, the results can look spectacular. Matt has recently completed a fab Christmas tree project with the local 'Beaver' group, (mini-scouts, not aquatic rodents!)

Grab yourself a paper Party hat, turn it upside down and place a plastic bag inside. Then fill that bag with plaster, Let it set, and Voila, a simple cone shaped mould.

Provide each kid a cone mould and a 'prepped' piece of flat clay. Let them wrap the clay around the cone and press together at the join. Then using a drinking straw bash a load of holes all over the clay cone, using the plaster mould as a support, (even the most aggressive 'bashing' shouldn't fell the tree on its cone support!). Then paint all over using a green Stroke & Coat colour.

Then, using a clay gun, extrude some square 'worms', to be attached to the painted tree as tinsel. It looks best to give them a little twist as you apply them, which gives them a little more depth. Makes sure they press them well against the tree as you want the whole piece to dry at the same rate, you do not want the tinsel to pop off as it dries.

Then ask the kids to roll up 'pea' sized balls which are again, pressed onto the side of the tree, giving the effect of little baubles. These can them be painted, along with the tinsel.

Provide a template of a star for each of them to cut around. Have them write their name on the reverse. Then paint the other side, and carefully squidge down on the top of the tree.

Leave teh whole thing on the cone to firm up, (as long as the paint still looks wet to the touch), then remove and stand on a board to dry completely. Fire to Cone 05, glaze, and fire again to cone 06.

For added 'Bling' paint on a little over-glaze gold star and refire to complete.

These pieces can them be used for many Christmases to come as adorable little candle covers.

Fabulous, inspiring series just started on BBC 4, running through the fascinating history of Pottery/Ceramics within the UK. 'Ceramics: A fragile History' explains the foundation of the business we run today.

Even though our industry in 'Pottery Painting' does not get involved with the raw material as much as the examples in the program, so many of the principles of 'why' an item has been created are reflected very strongly within each of the businesses we supply today. A particularly poetic quote from the program noted that unlike other materials, silver, glass, fabric, etc, ceramics is made as a mark in time, and cannot then be remade or melted down.

Within your businesses you are able to offer the general public a very successful way of getting involved with this contemporary ceramic creation process, which I see embraces very similar commemorative principles as have been considered for hundreds, even thousands of years. The difference now is with 'Pottery Painting' you are able to introduce anybody into your business, and with a little guidance, create items that will mark a special moment in time, that could last every bit as long as some of the examples within the program.

Well worth a watch.

I do not make a habit of watching kids T.V. however, with young kids at the weekend, I will confess, T.V. can be used in my house as a temporary form of early morning child care, I know, it's nothing to be proud of!! I do I hope I am not alone in this!?

Anyhow, last Saturday, as I stumbled, bleary eyed through the living room, I noticed a girl on the T.V. painting a plate with her puppet friend, not the usual paint on glaze efforts, but real 'Pottery Painting' onto bisque,.... just as my son (clearly not impressed with all that rubbish that daddy does at work!), switches channels, "switch it back, switch it back!" I shout!

Turns out, (for those of you not avid Cbeebies viewers), a program called Mighty Mites, visited the Hotpotz Ceramic Studio in Whitley Bay, showing kids painting various items, sponging on plates, even banding! A superb advert for this studio but also for the wider ceramic painting industry in general, Well done Sarah! Your studio looked fantastic!

Come and join us towards the end of September for a fun filled, educational couple of days, learning with one of Mayco’s inspiring teachers, (Pauline Wyndham), some simple, yet extremely effective techniques, using some of the very latest products from this highly respected Ceramic manufacturer.

How to run a Successful Retail Business...

1. Choose Ceramics!

As unusual, and unique as your 'Pottery Painting' business undoubtedly is, it is worth remembering that the colour of the money that you are looking for is exactly the same as many other retail businesses in your local area. It is a good idea from time to time to step back from the day to day running of your business and check that you competing for your fair share of the retail spend, that even in hard times, is still out there for the taking.

The "Unique" appeal of Pottery Painting is a valuable component of your business. Being able to offer your customers a place to be creative and produce long lasting, durable items is truly a wonderful thing that will initially attract great interest. However, being able to turn that into the basis of a profitable and long lasting business I feel begins by understanding a few things such as ,how you have got the customers you currently have, then how you can increase their numbers, where to find the next customer, and critically, how to make sure your last customer both returns as well as tells all their friends about you. These are all standard points worthy of consideration for any retail business, ceramics or not!

The studios we supply are run by the most amazing people. One moment you are the teacher, the next you are the sales person, not to mention being the accountant-marketing expert-P.R./H.R. representative-technical advisor, all rolled into one! With all these responsibilities, it can be difficult allocating the time that each retail business should to check that you are effectively reaching as many new customers as possible, as well as making the most of all the benefits your products and services have to offer.

It can be a very worth while exercise to set aside a few moments to review your business both from your perspective, as well as from your customers. What do you need from your business?, do you feel you are getting the return from it that your time requires? Are there things that you think or know that you need to do to improve or update the presentation of your studio?

It is worth taking a walk down your local high street and take note of all the shops that jump out at you, what are they doing that perhaps you can learn from. Millions of pounds are spent every year by big name high street retailers, working out how to keep bringing you back into their stores, remember it is not the product alone that sells itself!! A key aspect of high street presentation, which applies wherever you are, if you are lucky enough to have a static display area, is a constantly changing and themed arrangement. Are you doing that? You are at a distinct advantage with the bright, colourful product you sell, being able to create a big impact display with generic products you already have available, by simply decorating them to whatever style is currently in fashion. Either this will be a seasonal display of items (keep colours co-coordinated to get full impact!) hearts for Valentines, decorations fro Christmas, Pumpkins for Halloween, or a topical display of styles and trends that are currently in vogue; a key one at the moment that is sure to get attention is a simple display of white ceramics painted with St. George's cross, as a Football World Cup promotion, (let's hope this particular display has a shelf life longer than many pundits currently expect!!)

Be aware that what you are selling is not a commodity. Far from it. The customer experience is a key factor that will not only make for a content customer, but crucially will develop that most valuable of marketing tools; Word of Mouth! Is your studio easily accessible, clean, colourful, inviting, and a place that your key customer will want to spend time?

On that point, work out who your 'Key Customers' are. Pottery Painting appeals to all, from kids, to teenagers, adults, parents, OAP's. You may be cantering in on just one of these age groups, which is fine, however if you want your business to grow and not be too guided by the highs and lows in demand that may come from each sector, try offsetting this by opening up the appeal to a wider selection of the public.

Ask yourself "why do these people come here?!", and "where do they come from?", if you know the answers to these questions you put yourself in a much better position to direct your promotions into areas of your business that are bringing in customers, and also directly marketing to bring in more of these important customers rather than putting up posters or doing random leaflet drops. If you have recently had several new mums in, doing baby footprint plates then go after that, talk to local nursery groups, mother and toddler groups, even see if you can get a sample in the maternity suite at your local hospital, (get them early, "at source"!) Or, perhaps you have had several older customers during the day time, making you realise there may be a market here that needs attention, or adults in the evening,... Rather than second guess where your next customer is coming from, use the information that your business will be able to provide to direct your next promotion.

So, Here's the big secret... here's the reward for sticking with me and reading this far!......
Firstly, to run a successful Pottery Painting business you need a strong foundation in the product that you sell, insisting no item leaves your studio that you are not completely happy with. (we can help you with that!)
Then, .... (and this, without question is understood by ALL the most successful studios we supply), it's quite simple,.. in fact it is the very reason why our industry finds a strong place today within the struggling high street, and no product bought 'online' can offer a competitive experience,..

it is... CUSTOMER SERVICE!

Customer Service is a commodity that we have in this industry by the bucket load! No good studio will be overlooking this most important aspect in their everyday operations. As our high street gradually becomes less independent, trying to find a business that goes that extra mile and exceeds our expectations is frustratingly rare. The great thing about this, is... this is the easy stuff! Co-efficient of expansion, glaze compatibilities, cash flow and the like, now that's the tricky bit, smiling at your customers and ensure they enjoy their visit is easy, and what is more, is actually fun for you too!
I was reminded of this yesterday, as I queued to enter my local leisure centre with my young boys for our weekly swim. The solitary girl serving was slowly entering a new family onto the computer system, filling in forms, gawping at a screen and answering the customers' questions with mono-syllabic, albeit accurate, but totally uninterested replies. Nothing especially noteworthy and in itself rather predictable, however, it was so apparent to me that all that was required was a little eye contact, quick apology for keeping the rest of the queue waiting, and that would certainly have sent us all away with a positive memory of of the visit. It takes effort to turn a bad experience into a positive one, and clearly there needs to be the incentive there to do this, which I doubt there was. It is notable that as a society we rarely complain face to face, instead we prefer to relay our experiences to our friends, sometimes even printing it in a Blog! One unhappy customer in a small retail business that relies on local recommendation, (particularly with Pottery Painting, which relies so heavily 'Word of Mouth') is a disaster. Easily offset any risk to your business by getting in first, launching into the world legions of happy customers eager to tell all their like minded friends about your studio!

A beautiful item leaving your studio will NOT bring in more new customers, unless it is accompanied by a recommendation of good 'old fashioned' customer service! Give your customers a reason, in fact several reasons to want to come back, don't just 'serve' them, give them an 'experience' that they will tell friends all about, and very soon you will be seeing the exciting opportunities that await any business in this unique sector!

Last year together we raised at least £3,500.00 painting pottery Pudsey bears. This year we would love to raise more, for this great cause. We donate 25p for each one we sell and you have to donate at least 50p for each one painted.

We are finialising the contract for this year, which you will need the sign again before you purchase the bisque this year.

We have recently spoken with the people at Activity Superstore, who are a company that offers experiences for the public to buy in high street retail shops, such as 'Pamper' days, Balloon rides, Aston Martin drives, that sort of thing..... They are introducing in September later this year, as a new activity, 'Pottery Painting' and are interested to hear back from any studio who would be like to register with them as the chosen 'Pottery Painting' studio, from as many towns in the UK as possible.

It is important to say, Hobby Ceramicraft has no affiliation with this company, however, we feel it is certainly something that each studio ought to consider whether they would like to get involved with.

The studio then presents this back to Activity Superstore for payment. They will take approximately the price of 2 studio fees from the voucher value as their payment for offering you this customer.

Negatives:- You "lose" say £10 or so on the visit,
You have extra paperwork, and you may have to wait for your money.

Positives:- Free advertising in prime positions,
You only pay when it works, (no take up, no customers, no payments)
It should bring in "New" customers. The voucher could easily be purchased as a unique gift by a friend, so the recipient not having paid for it anyway would most likely come in with an open mind, eager to make the most of the present they have been given
There should be great opportunities to sell add-ons, or upsell to more expensive items when you have them in store, treat them well and then get full payment repeat visits from them in the future.
If they loved the visit, sell them your own gift vouchers to give to others, this time you get full payment and in advance!

Worst case scenario, you basically lose out on the equivalent of your studio fees, but the remainder will at very least cover material and overheads, and it is free advertising bringing in more people for you to impress and sell to.

Both my boys were glued to the TV when I returned from work, "Hello Boys" i shout,.... "hello daddy" they reply without taking their eyes off the screen!

My wife had stuck a DVD on so she could get some work done. In order for me to try an remind my kids who their father was, I thought perhaps I should sit with them and watch the film too, I know, this is top class, inspirational parenting! Anyway, I nearly fell of the sofa when the cartoon senator suggests he will be shutting down the space agency and in its place opening up a place where you can "design, paint and 'bake' your own plates!!!!" OMG!

The film was Space Chimps, I think this is the most recognition I have seen of our industry in a mainstream film, how obscure! It's a pretty fun film to!

When the snow began to fall down in the South of England, after about a week the novelty soon wore off, and as some of you may have experienced as well, running the business as normal became quite a battle. Thankfully the view from my window this morning is predominantly green, with more snow forecast, I do hope we have seen off the worst!

After we struggled to get to work last week, dug our way through the car park, only to find we had to drag out our generator to power up the computers due to the power cut - which did not want to start until I had spent half the morning swearing at it, hitting it, and taking bits off cleaning them, then swearing a bit more because I could not remember where I had taken them from! - I received an email from a new studio on the north west coast of Scotland. It was from a very resilient lady called Fiona, who managed to put our inconveniences into perspective!

Fiona set up her business in 2009 in a conservatory which was linked to a restaurant. Who would have thought to check how strong the roof was!

Difficult to look for 'Silver Linings' in this, however, if this were to happen, perhaps happening at this time of year, over the Christmas season ensured there were no students decorating underneath as the roof began to descend!

I have full confidence that Craic Pots 2010 will rise from the ashes, and be back in business before you know it, Ceramic Studio owners are built from hardy stuff!

Make a Clean Sweep!

When I was young, we had some elderly neighbours who would make it their first job of every new year to spring clean their house. When asked why, they said it started the New Year on the right foot. Back then I wasn't convinced of this logic, but nowadays I can really see where they were coming from!

Everyone can benefit from a good clean-up - not only in the studio, but also in the back-office. In these quieter times after the festive rush, you should turn your thoughts to what went well in the last year, and what you would like to see done better.

Remember that you are running a business, and your key aim is to ensure you are making enough profit for your needs. Nobody wants to be a "busy fool". So while you are looking at your successes and learning experiences from the last year, and planning for 2010, remember these key points.

There are only three ways you can increase profitability:

Decrease your expenses
Increase your sales
Increase the profit you make on each sale

Point 1 relies on getting the best deal on supplies - no problem - you've got Hobby Ceramicraft on your side!

Point 2 is where you can inject the most effort to ensure you are getting your name out there. Also look at your pricing - would your customers pay more for your services? The answer is very often "YES!"

Now point 3 is all about making the most of your money, and good examples of what to look at in this area would be:

How much stock are you holding? 1 month, 6 months, a year's worth maybe. How much do you really need to keep under the counter?

How much wastage is there in your studio - are customers using too much colour on each project? Can you encourage them to use less and spend more?

How well do you use your employees? Often we are reluctant to hand over control to our staff, but maybe you can use them better - look at training them in areas they are interested in - they could bring a whole new income stream into your business.

Now I know that this side of the business can often seem impossible to tackle, but you can do it - simply set yourself some achievable tasks in the next few months:

Start a cashflow sheet to review how much money you'll have at key points over the next few months - then you can be prepared if cashflow gets tight

Talk to other studio owners and get some ideas from the way they do things - some may do things better, some may not - you'll find out

The first thing you can do is book onto Hobby Ceramicraft's monthly customer meeting - held from 11am to 2pm one day each month - you'll learn a project with Jane and get a buffet lunch, while chatting to other studio owners...and you've already ticked a task off your list! It's Snowing!!!

As much as it surely is dangerous, and slippery, and freezing cold outside, there is no doubt the view from our studio window is currently, quite beautiful!

Here in the South of England we have had more snow recently than I can recall for many years, I measured 15cm in our car park this morning! Our Road is eerily quiet, cars have been abandon due to gridlocked traffic, our staff have had all sorts of problems trying to get to and from work, and couriers are not collecting or delivering to, or from this area. Thankfully this happens at a time when our business seasonally slows down anyway.

The trees surrounding us are heavily laden with snow. As you may be able to see from the picture, the weight of the snow is bringing down branches and trees, and on our large oak tree behind our warehouse, a 30 foot long branch has fallen, thankfully during the night, and conveniently avoiding any structures or stock! Falling trees also caused our power to be off all day on Tuesday, so apologies to anyone who may have been expecting a reply to an email yesterday or had a phone call unanswered. Today we back to normal, however, all shipments out will be delayed due to the road conditions, please call us for an update.

An additional problem to all this has been that sadly the snow we have is the 'wrong kind' of snow for building snowmen! My attempts with my Children last night concluded with not a 'Snow-Man', but a long pile of snow that we fashioned into what resembled...... a 'Snow-Basking-Shark'!

These items are part of our new economy range of Party Bisque. Tree is 14.5cm tall, ornaments are 8 to 8.5cm tall. Sold in cases of 12. All are decorated with Stroke and Coat colours then Clear glazed and fired to cone06 (1000C). From Right to left;

PB96 Round Snowman, 1 coat of SC31 all over and then wiped off leaving colour in the detail. Apply one and two coats SC77, SC76, SC75, SC74, SC15 to appropirate areas.

PB100 Reindeer in hat, 1 coat of SC34 all over then wiped off with a damp sponge leaving colour in detail. Apply colours as a wash SC74 to Hat, SC73 to jacket, SC85 to gloves and scarf, SC51 to body, SC16 to trim.

PB101 Santa in Hat, SC73 to hat & coat, SC35 to beard, SC25 gloves, SC74 to candy cane, SC15 to boots and eyes.

PB31 Tree with opening for tealight, 1 coat of SC8 all over tree then wipe off using a damp sponge leaving colour in detail. Add water to SC26 to make a wash of colour and apply all over tree. SC74 three coats to base, sponge SC15 on MAT103 to create pattern on base.

PB97 Round Santa, SC37 beard, SC20 face, SC87 Ruby Slippers to hat and coat, SC80 Gloves, SC8 to tree and holly. Once dipped SG302 snowfall was painted in trim.

PB95 Round Reindeer, 1 coat of SC34 all over and removed with damp sponge leaving colour in detail. Add a little water to the colours to apply a wash to each area. SC51 antlers, SC37 nose, SC25 body, SC74 scarf, SC24 bell, SC85 Gloves.

PB99 Snowman in hat, 1 coat of SC31 all over and then removed with damp sponge. SC76, SC77 SC74 , SC75 , SC15 to detail.

PB33 Tree Dish, 17cm Long. 3 coats of S2728 to centre and 3 coats of SP274 to edges and back. No clear glaze is used.

Zyllah and her team at Crazy Glaze in Godmanchester have raised over £1600 for Breast Cancer Care. They have just completed three busy ladies nights, doing Boob Prints! Each print was turned into a piece of art, from chocolate muffins to wheels of racing cars.
50% of her studio fee and 50% of the piece prices was donated to Breast Cancer Care. Zyllah feels that if her customers are brave enough to have their breast painted then she needed to be generous with her donation. Some customers have been very brave and are auctioning their pieces off to raise even more money for the cause, others will keep and give to partners at Christmas.
If you are in the area, all pieces will on display in her shop window until the 14th November. The event was held in her studio. Topless male waiters made sure everyone had a drink as well as selling raffle tickets for prizes, donated by other local businesses. Customers could also buy Pink Ceramic Ribbons that Zyllah had made using our A922 awareness ribbon.

New Italian Money Boxes

Just arrived in stock, these hand-thrown, 22cm tall bisque money boxes were a special request from a super studio who buys similar pieces already painted from a giftware wholesaler, paints on the side individual messages with non-fired paints and re-sells in her shop.

These bisque pieces will be a fraction of the cost, and can be decorated either with non-fired colours, or as you would do normally with your standard fired colours and glazes.

Traditional Italian Money boxes have no 'bung' in the bottom, so you cannot touch your money until the whole piece is fully loaded with cash. The top is then cracked off, or carefully smashed. Hopefully this will then require the customer to return to your studio to get another!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Nearly 46,000 people are diagnosed every year with Breast Cancer. The purpose of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to get people talking about the disease. Raising money at events also raises awareness.

The charity Breast Cancer Care is encouraging people to hold Pink Friday Events throughout October.

I feel this is a great opportunity to get involved in a good cause, raise some money by donating £1 for each piece painted on these days. The cost to the studio/ business is minimal as customers can paint any item, and a studio already has pink. The condition would be that the item has to be painted mostly pink.

Halloween Mugs

The inside and outside of these mugs were painted with three coats of Foundation Glaze. I used FN03 Orange, FN14 Antique White, FN15 Brick Red, FN16 Harvest Orange, FN21 Olive Green. Take care when meeting the two colours, making sure you dont leave any unglazed areas. Using a sponge apply Sc15 Tuxedo to moulding Mat MAT101 and carefully transfer pattern. Do the same with MAT116 using a colour of your choice. Add colour to the pumpkin, cat and ghost with just a wash of Stroke and Coat. Fire in a kiln to cone06 (1000C).

Foundation Glazes are so easy to apply using a soft fan brush, designwork can be done on top of the glaze and no clear glaze is required. This is a foodsafe finish. Jane

Happy Halloween.

This quick and effective project, is achieved by painting three coats of FN03 Orange Foundation to the inside of the pumpkin. Then three coats of SC78 Lime Light to the outside excluding the stalk. Using Moulding Mat MAT368 sponge SC39 Army Surplus to the mat and then gently press mat to piece transfering the pattern. Stalk- Apply 3 coats of EL108 Jade Moss, then dab SC16 Cotton Tail here and there to create interesting glaze finish. Stilt in the kiln and fire to cone 06 (1000C).

Learning how to 'Pot' is generally something we all have memories of from our school days. Finding somewhere to improve or learn about working with clay, as he says can be the reserve of Formal Adult Education evening classes, which may not fit in with the lifestyle of the majority of the general public, and perhaps may not embellish just how much 'FUN' clay can be when taught not to both kids, adults and families alike.

Which Colour Brand to Choose?

Within the PYOP market you will find many similar looking colour brands all claiming to be 'Fool Proof', 'Easy to Use' and 'Non-Toxic' available, so when you are starting out, how do you know which one is best for you?

Also, if you are an existing studio, how do you know you have the best available product? It can be a huge wrench to switch from one brand to another, particularly if you have all your samples decorated in a current brand. How can you be sure another brand of yellow for example will match the current yellow you have been using?

Before we get to the solution, a little background that you need not know too much about... There is a beautiful chemistry underlying a good colour product, for the PYO Pottery market this needs to take into account the additional specific requirements we have for a viable studio product. Of significant importance are: consistency, colour pigmentation (for good coverage), usability (for all ages), non-toxic (as standard) as well as the 'stability' of the product when used onto 'general' bisque when used under a 'Lead-Free' clear glaze. The manufacturers that understand this particular market best, take these factors into account, formulating a product that is almost unique within Pottery/Ceramics, just for the PYO Pottery industry.

How to pick which is best?

Quality. Always comes before price, get a feel for the differences between the leading brands and you decide which one suits you best, clearly a supplier (like us!) will have a natural bias toward the brand they sell, so look at which brands other studios are using, compare the qualities for yourself to see which you prefer.

Price. A key element, speaks for itself, we'll always strive to cut our margins to offer the leading brands at prices that will benefit your business, colour is a staple product in your business, do not feel trapped into loyalty to another brand simply based on 'Quality' alone, be aware of the relative benefits of other brands, and keep checking you are getting the best possible price.

Availability. You'll not want to hear from a supplier that they have run out of extremely popular colours like Red or Yellow in the middle of the school holidays, next shipment due in a few weeks! If we get low, we take a loss and get emergency colour flown over from the manufacturer, simply to give continuity of supply.

And why do we think we stock the best?

Well, this should be rejected as a statement unless it can be proved! This is why we have recently had produced for us a set of tiles which directly compare the three leading colour brands side by side in 28 separate tests. These range from comparing the opacity of white over black whilst under different glazes, painting onto clay, compatibility with other brands, and even firing reds to over 1200C to see what happens!

The results are pictured here although not in enough detail to realistically compare, if you want more detailed information on the tests run, or how equivalent colours in different brands compare, do let us know.

Now don't tell me you didn't heave a huge sigh of relief when those grey clouds came over and the rain started to fall. We all know that one of the success factors for a ceramic studio is the unpredictability of the English weather!

With the economic circumstances still a major factor in people's leisure spend, you'll find no shortage of punters in UK holiday spots throughout the summer months, meaning that you should have plenty of footfall past your door.

So be prepared - make sure you have enough of those core pieces to cope with unusual seasonal demand, and plenty of projects ready for your customers to take advantage of. Also, make sure your shop window is looking REALLY inviting. Try and put yourself in the customer's shoes - if you went past your window, would you really be able to tell in a few seconds what was going on inside?

Janes daughters aged 5 and 7, had great fun creating these lovely necklaces as end of term gifts for their teachers and classroom assistants.

The CKD13 Small Heart Hanger makes a lovely pendent, and is easy to fire on a HC106 Firing rod between two shelf posts.

JANE HITS THE HEADLINES!

Jane has been in the national news recently! Having checked out our electricity pricing on the comparison website makeitcheaper.com, she saved a huge amount by switching providers. The company was amazed by the amount she saved, and asked to use Hobby Ceramicraft as a case study. Subsequently Jane was invited to give her story to the Daily Mail and was photographed for the article.

This is a great lesson for you and your company. Don't take it for granted that you are being given the best deal by your providers - there are often savings to be made, and every penny you save can affect that bottom line!

Following the format of our regular monthly open days, we'll be inviting trade customers to come along and meet Colleen, who as CEO of Mayco Colors is uniquely placed to give us an overview of the industry and the main issues facing Paint Your Own Pottery studios.

As well as that, we are please to welcome Leah Cotton, Mayco UK studio liaison, who will be leading a decorating project using the latest colour and bisque. Leah hosted the very successful Clarice Cliff seminar that we ran last year.

Tom completes 40km for charity

Well done Tom! He recently completed a 40km walk in West Sussex for the Limbless Association - a small charity helping out amputees and their families, raising over £500. He completed the walk in 8 hours.

Luckily the weather was kind!

Is he hanging up his boots? Not on your life! Says Tom: "Matt has promised he'll do another run if I do another walk, so the challenge has been set - watch this space..."

Matt makes the grade in the Hook Fun Run

Congratulations to Matt for completing the 10km Hook Fun Run over the weekend. He managed to complete the course in a splendid 1 hour 26 minutes!

Here in the photo you can see Matt getting a well-deserved hug from son George, who was very pleased indeed to see him home!

Mayco Pottery Camp 11-12th May 2009 - FANTASTIC!

Wow! What a fantastic time we had with the Mayco Pottery Camp this time round. Thanks to all of you who came to take part - we just had a ball. the projects were so much fun - you are all so creative.

From the welcome plaque to the Magic Metallic beads, there was no end to the ingenuity you guys showed!

Thanks also to the wonderful Teddy Wright who came over from the US to host this great event. Teddy can be seen here modelling a mew look - she has discovered a novel use for those old blue leg warmers sitting in the back of the cupboard ... create your own ARM-WARMERS in an instant!

Our star project from the pottery camp was this candlestick with Crystallite glazes - it is a really novel use of glazes, but VERY simple to achieve. This will go down a treat with your customers.

New Mayco Bisque

We have had some great feedback from the most recent bisque release that we have announced. Loads of you are really chuffed with the new cupcake shapes, and the new mushroom stakes are going to be big for summer.

I'm very excited about the butterfly and dragonfly shapes that are included - I hear that there may soon be even more of this type of piece to choose from...watch this space.
